Welcome to the website for Introductory Physical Chemistry (59-240) in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at the University of Windsor.

Attention students: The 9th and 10th editions of “Physical Chemistry” by P.W. Atkins will be supported this year. Please see the Outline and Notes pages for more information on textbooks.

Course Description

Properties of ideal and real gases, first and second laws of thermodynamics, physical transformations of substances, mixtures of substances and phase diagrams are applied to changes of state, chemical reactions and spontaneous processes. (Prerequisites: 59-141, 62-140, and 62-141.) (3 lecture, 3 lab or 1.5 tutorial hours in alternate weeks.)

Please note that this course cannot be taken without 62-140 and 62-141, or equivalent courses taken outside of the University of Windsor (contact the Mathematics Department for more information on equivalent courses). 62-130 is not sufficient for taking this course! There are no exceptions to this prerequisite.
